Jaisalmer Fort |
|
This huge fort
is made out of natural sandstone, and has the distinction
of being the only fort that houses the city’s residents.
The intricate carvings of the fort are splendid, and one
can easily envision the grandeur of the glorious era long
past. Like a yellow sand stone fabric that seems to issue
skywards from the golden sands, Jaisalmer Fort standing
guard over the desert scape from its 250 feet high perch
on the hill within its wall following the contours of the
hills, is sheer magic & splendid sight. It also houses an
entire township within its huge ramparts. The steep cobble
stone pathways leading to the royal palace pass through
for gates called Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol, Hawa Pol and
Bhoota Pol. The sharp twists & turns make the fort
invincible. The fort has five interconnected palaces. This
fort is certainly one of the finest forts of India. It was
built in the 11th century, above the 80 m high Trikuta
hill, having 99 turrets in it. the fort is a maze of small
winding lanes, initially flanked by touristy shops, little
child-musicians colourfully dressed and performing
traditional songs & dances. women selling imitation silver
jewelry. The Fort houses a maharaja's palace, a ceremonial
courtyard and beautifully carved Jain temples. |

Sand Dunes of Sam |
|
42 kms west of Jiasalmer
are proper sand dunes and popular with camel safaris. This
jaisalmer's nearest real Sahara like desert. The sand
shimmers under the glow of hot sun highlighting what
actually a desert stands for. Various cultural programmes
are organised against the backdrop of these facinating
dunes. Adventure freaks can go out on a Camel
Safari-getting the real feel the desert on the camel. Of
course, the sunset at Sam was out-of-this-world. The sand
dunes keep changing colour, shadows shifting by the
minute. |
