Starting from 28th May - 30tyh May 2004

Hill Station of the Rajasthan in a festive mood with the Summer Festival, held every year in the month of June. The steep rocks, tranquil lakes, picturesque locations and the pleasant climate of Mount Abu make it an ideal location for the festival. The three-day festival is a feast of folk and classical music and a window to the tribal life and culture of Rajasthan.

The festival begins with the singing of a ballad which is followed by folk dances which enthral the spectators. Sporting events such as the boat race on the Nakki lake add variety to the festival.

The Sham-e-Qawwali is a much-awaited musical extravaganza, as renowned qawwals from all over the country can be heard regaling the audience. The grand finale of the festival is a display of dazzling fireworks which adds to the tourist's delight.

Udaipur (185 kms.) is the nearest airport. Abu Road (29 kms.) is the nearest railway station. Taxis and buses are available from both the airport and the railway station. There is also a good network of bus services connecting Mount Abu to important places like Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaipur etc.

Nakki Lake

Nakki lake is a tiny situated in the heart of Mount Abu. This lake is the only artificial lake in India that is 1200 mts. above sea level. The lake is dotted with several islets approachable by a boat. Of particular interest are strange rock formations around the lake. Especially notable is the Toad Rock which looks like a real toad about to jump into the lake. Others are Nun Rock and Nandi Rock etc. Set in the heart of the town, the lake gets its name from the legend that it was scooped out by the gods with their finger nails or 'Nakh'.

 
 

Gurmukh Temple

A natural spring flowing through a sculpted cow's head gives the shrine its name. The famous 'Vagna' of Sage Vashishtha was performed here. A beautifully sculpted hill temple of Arbuada - the mighty serpent, stands against the beautiful backdrop. Nearby is the magnificent marble image of Nandi, the celestial bull rescued by Arbuada.

 
 

Delwara Jain Temple

 

These beautifully carved temples built between 11th and 13th century A.D. are sheer elegance in marble, dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras. The Vimal Vasathi temple is the oldest of these dedicated to the first Tirthankara. Built in 1031 A.D. (by Vimal Shah - A merchant and representative of the then Gujarat ruler), it is a superb example of temple architecture. The central shrine has an image of Rishabhdev and large courtyard with 52 small shrines, each housing a beautiful statue of thirthankaras with 48 elegantly carved pillars form the entrance to the courtyard.


Luni Vanshi Temple

This Temple is dedicated to the 22nd Tirthankara - Neminath, was built in 1231 A.D. by two brothers - Vastupal and Tejpal, Ministers of Raja Vir Dhawal, a ruler of Gujarat - belonging to the Porwal Jain Community. With door casings, pillars, architraves, and sculptures on porticos, the temple is a fine specimen of craftsmanship.

 
   

 

 


 

Mount Abu - Excursion
 

Guru Shikhar

 

15 km, at the end of the plateau is Guru Shikhar the highest peak on the mount at an altitude of 1722 mtrs. a road goes all the way to the summit.The peak allows a bird's eye view of the sylvan surroundings of Mount Abu.

 
 

Achalgarh Fort

8 kms away from the town, Achalgarh Fort impressive fort with some beautiful Jain temples enclosed within. Among the noteworthy temples are Achaleswar Mahadev Temple (1412 A.D.) and Kantinath Jain Temple (1513 A.D.) The latter has a gold plated image. Mandakini Kund and a sculpture of Parmar Dharavarsh are situated close to the Achaleswar Mahadev Temple. The Fort was built in the 14th century A.D. by Rana Kumbha and is approachable by a motorable road.

This temple is 11 kms north from the town centre. It's unique 'Shiv Baan' in the temple sacrosanct is sculpted out of a rock and in its centre is a natural cavity which is of great depth.


   

 

 


  Mount Abu - Accessibility

Udaipur 185 kms is the nearest airport. Taxis are available to reach Mt. Abu Road 29 km is the closest railhead on Jaipur-Ajmer-Ahmedabad broad-gauge route & is buses can be hired for onward journey to Mount Abu. Key connections are
Ahmedabad i.e. 221 kms,
Udaipur i.e. 165 kms via Sanderao & Ranakpur,
Jaipur i.e.  490 kms, via Sirohi, Pali, Ajmer.
